340 years have passed since the Pueblo Revolt of 1680; the very first Indigenous revolution to happen on stolen land. The resistance against tyranny in our territory was absolutely necessary for continuation of our cultures, traditions, and lifeways. The uprising took 10 years of planning with great dedication and vision of ending colonial violence. It established Pueblo independence throughout communities for more than a decade. The organizing of tactics, strategy & knowledge of landbase were integral for this revolution.
.
PAA honors & acknowledges the commitment which brought forth a unified rebellion against Spanish Conquistadors. On the night of August 10, 1680, the People in more than two dozen Pueblos and allies simultaneously attacked the Spanish. A force of 2,500 warriors sacked and burned the colonial headquarters in Santa Fe. By the time the revolt succeeded, Pueblo fighters had killed more than 400 Spanish soldiers and civilians (including two-thirds of the Catholic priests in the region) and had driven the surviving Europeans back to El Paso.
.
Collective armed resistance was in opposition of forced religion, greed and power that still plagues our land and people. Today they are present in forms of institutions and systems such as capitalism, extractive colonialism, and imperialism. The systemic oppression that encroaches on our sovereignty is our battlefield in present day.
.
As descendants of Pueblo Revolutionaries, we must extend past expressing gratitude of the Pueblo Revolt to move towards that same resistance. As Pueblo Peoples it is vital, as our livelihood is threatened and under attack everyday. Every community member had a role in this act of community defense.
.
We can empower and challenge ourselves to find what our roles look like for today. To preserve our cultural integrity we must embody the resistance within our bloodlines. We give thanks for the guidance that is given to us to continue this lifework.

Buffy Sainte-Marie may have been the first person to nurse on major television.

Repost from @treasure_chamber

In May of 1977, Sesame Street taught children what breastfeeding was. Buffy (played by Cree singer, artist, advocate, and mother Sainte-Marie), then a regular cast member on the show, quietly nursed her baby son Cody in Big Bird’s nest area.

It was Buffy’s idea to do this segment with her son, and producers went right along with it.
