Once a site of the US federal relocation program, Once a site of the US federal relocation program, the present-day San Francisco Bay Area is home to a large Urban Native population. The American Indian Cultural District is the first Urban Native cultural district in the state of California and was founded on March 31, 2020. It is dedicated to recognizing, honoring, and celebrating the American Indian legacy, culture, people, and contributions.

"Instead of it making us weaker, it made us stronger because that collective thinking, that thought, that process and that advocacy… that happened here." —Mary Allen-Travis, American Indian Cultural District (Mayagna, Chortega, Seneca)

The first of its kind, the American Indian Cultural District was started 2 years ago in San Francisco’s Mission District. It’s a hub for urban Natives in the Bay Area, and a keeper of Native history in San Francisco—such as the ‘69 Alcatraz Occupation.

@aicd.sf also underscores the continuous presence, resistance and survival of Indigenous people in the so-called Bay Area: “That is why I think the district is so symbolic… you can't deny that we're here anymore. You can't say that we don't exist.”—Sharaya Souza, (Taos Pueblo, Ute, Kiowa)

This week on #Rightnowsh, join the American Indian leaders of The District as they take @spaghettivaquera and @ogpenn on a tour of San Francisco’s culturally-significant Indigenous sites—starting with #DoloresPark.

Buckle up, we got learning to do.

Over 870,000 Indigenous items including 110,000 an Over 870,000 Indigenous items including 110,000 ancestral remains are still in possession of United States colleges, museums, and other institutions.

Since archeology’s early years, an untold number of Indigenous peoples remains and artifacts have been collected.

In 1990 the Native American Graves and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) was passed. It is a federal human rights law governing the return of American Indian remains and objects by institutions receiving money.

In spite of federal law passed more than 30 years ago, the repatriation process has been slow and many remains and artifacts have yet to be repatriated.
