August 8-14 is Indigenous Milk Medicine Week. Its August 8-14 is Indigenous Milk Medicine Week. Its goal is to strengthen Indigenous traditions from birth and beyond.

Buffy Sainte-Marie may have been the first person to nurse on major television.

Repost from @treasure_chamber

In May of 1977, Sesame Street taught children what breastfeeding was. Buffy (played by Cree singer, artist, advocate, and mother Sainte-Marie), then a regular cast member on the show, quietly nursed her baby son Cody in Big Bird’s nest area.

It was Buffy’s idea to do this segment with her son, and producers went right along with it.

"Instead of it making us weaker, it made us stronger because that collective thinking, that thought, that process and that advocacy… that happened here." —Mary Allen-Travis, American Indian Cultural District (Mayagna, Chortega, Seneca)

The first of its kind, the American Indian Cultural District was started 2 years ago in San Francisco’s Mission District. It’s a hub for urban Natives in the Bay Area, and a keeper of Native history in San Francisco—such as the ‘69 Alcatraz Occupation.

@aicd.sf also underscores the continuous presence, resistance and survival of Indigenous people in the so-called Bay Area: “That is why I think the district is so symbolic… you can't deny that we're here anymore. You can't say that we don't exist.”—Sharaya Souza, (Taos Pueblo, Ute, Kiowa)

This week on #Rightnowsh, join the American Indian leaders of The District as they take @spaghettivaquera and @ogpenn on a tour of San Francisco’s culturally-significant Indigenous sites—starting with #DoloresPark.

Buckle up, we got learning to do.
