Thank you for speaking these truths @amberruffin Thank you for speaking these truths @amberruffin
504 acres of ancestral land in present-day Suffolk 504 acres of ancestral land in present-day Suffolk County, Virginia were returned back to the Nansemond Nation.

The lands, which are forest wetlands known as Cross Swamp, were used for hunting and foraging and later as a refuge when settlers forcibly pushed the Nansemond Nation out of their lands.

In 2018, a family reached out to Ducks Unlimited to sell Cross Swamp for conservation. Ducks Unlimited coordinated with Virginia Outdoors Foundation, who suggested that instead of state or federal agencies getting the land they return it to Nansemond Nation who had just received federal recognition status in 2018.

Federally recognized nations are sovereign nations with their own governments including services and programs such as environmental programs funded by the EPA.

The land was acquired by Nansemond for $1.1 million with support from the Enviva Forest Conservation Fund, the North American Wetlands Conservation Act grant program, and The Mary Morton Parsons Foundation.

"We were the original stewards of these lands. We feel privileged every day that we have the opportunity to be on our lands, to breathe the air, to view the wildlife. Something we don’t take lightly. This marks a tremendous point in our history and hopefully there will be many more to come,” Nansemond Chief Keith Anderson said.
